STUDY AT STATE UNIVERSITIES OF SLOVAKIA – FREE OF CHARGE

In 2014, a law was passed on free education in all public universities in Slovakia, for all foreign students, subject to study in the Slovak language.  All state universities require foreign students to have a state-recognized certificate of knowledge of the Slovak language. Such a certificate can only be obtained at preparatory courses accredited by the Ministry of Education of Slovakia. This is the only time you have to pay for on the way to higher education.

Student dormitories 70 -150 EUR, one room in a shared apartment 200 – 350 EUR, a on room apartment 500 – 700 EUR per month. Public Transport is 90 cents for each trip. There is monthly student transport card which cost about 15 EUR. In that case you can use all kind of transports for unlimited time in a period of one month. Generally, it is expected for undergraduate students to have a high School diploma and age between 18 and 24 years old. At the master’s level, the student must not be over 30 years old. There are no age limits for doctoral degrees. This is of course general, but there could be exceptions for each level of study.

Studying in Bachelor (undergraduate) level is 3 years, Master level is 2 years, Medicine is 6 years, Dentistry is 6 years, Pharmacy is 5 years, PhD level 3 to 4 years, depending on the university and Post Doctorate is 2 years.

Most of Slovak universities do not require a certificate an English certificate. However, applicants might be asked for an entrance exam where there will be a written or oral exam, evaluating level of their English Proficiency. Having an English Language certificate can have a positive impact on selection of students by faculties.

Slovak national program provides variety of Scholarships for different levels of study with different durations. The period of scholarship depends on the agreement with the host university. It can vary from 3 month to one year for a research activity. Slovak universities also provide a scholarship at PhD level. Applicant are required to have a Master’s degree certificate and fulfil the requirement for the PhD study program. The length of PhD program is 3 to 4 years depending on the university.

The Slovak language course is 1 year and it is designed to prepare the applicants for studying in Slovak universities. Slovak language course includes teaching the Slovak language, biology and chemistry for medical students and Mathematics and Physics for engineering programs.

The Bachelor/Undergraduate degree in Slovakia country is 3 to 4 years program. Candidates must have a 12-year diploma with official transcripts so they can apply for Slovak universities.

The tuition fees for Bachelor programs is between 1500 EUR for management and 2500 to 5000 EUR for Engineering programs.

The duration of master’s degree is normally 2 years. The tuition fee for master’s programs starts from 2000 EUR for management up to 7500 EUR for Pharmacy program. Engineering programs are between 3000 to 6000 EUR.

Almost all of Slovak universities start the academic year from September. There is a deadline for applying for each program at each level of study. Generally, the registration for Bachelor program starts from January and ends by April. The registration for master’s degree program starts form January and ends by May. PhD programs are normally open until June. Please take in account that each program and faculty have their own deadlines and you should submit your application Whitin that period. The deadlines could be extended by each faculty.

Generally, the students who receive a scholarship, are also provided a dormitory by the institution which offers the scholarship. In that sense, the amount of scholarship will be enough to cover basic life expenses of the applicant. This included, accommodation, transport, grocery, and travelling.
