Registration Procedures

Nationals of the European Union, European Economic Area Member States and Switzerland Citizens of the European Union/European Economic Area and Switzerland do not need a visa for entering the Slovak Republic.

They are however, required to prove their identity at the border with a valid travel document (passport/ ID card). Within 10 days upon their arrival in the Slovakia they should notify a police station of the date of commencement of their stay in the Slovakia, unless this duty lies on the provider of accommodation.

Citizens of the European Union/European Economic Area and Switzerland are recommended to apply for the permanent residence permit. The application is to be submitted in person, on an official form at the respective Foreign police station in Slovakia.

Temporary Residence Permit for students

Third countries nationals who wish to study in Slovakia need a temporary residence permit for study purposes. The application has to be submitted in person, abroad, at the representative office of the Slovak Republic. If a visa is not required a third country may apply for a temporary residence permit also at the respective Foreign police office in Slovakia. The foreign police section decides on the application within 30 days following the receipt of the application.

Temporary residence permit may be issued for the period necessary for achieving the purpose, but at maximum for 5 years. This may be extended prior to its termination on the basis of an application submitted to the police.

Within 30 days upon entering the Slovakia or upon the granting of the temporary residence permit, a confirmation on health insurance and a document confirming that he/she does not suffer from an infectious disease the spreading of which is punishable must be submitted to the Foreign police station in Slovakia. Permit for temporary stay for the purpose of study is not required, if the stay on the territory of the Slovakia does not exceed 90 days in one half‑year

In general, when applying for a Schengen visa, foreign nationals have to submit the following:

  • completed form “Application for Schengen Visa” The application must be signed by the applicant;
  • 2 Recent full-face color photograph 3 ×5 cm;
  • Valid travel document (passport), which must be valid for at least 6 months longer than the expected day of leaving the Schengen Area, it must have been issued within the previous 10 years and it must contain at least 2 blank pages;
  • Documents demonstrating the purpose of the planned stay (e.g. confirmation on acceptance for studies, invitation letter, letter of award, hosting agreement, etc.);
  • Proof of accommodation, e.g.: letter of award or hosting agreement in case they specify accommodation provided, voucher/reservation confirming hotel accommodation, personal letter of invitation confirming that the applicant will be staying at the inviting person’s place,
  • Documents confirming sufficient means of subsistence, e.g.: cash in a freely convertible currency; travel cheques; bank account statement confirming regular income (salary, pension); other documents safeguarding
  • documents enabling an assessment of the applicant’s intention to leave the Schengen territory before the expiry of the visa applied for (e.g. a return plane/bus/train ticket);
  • Travel medical insurance – insurance must cover all costs that may arise in connection with the repatriation of the applicant to his/her home country due to health problems, urgent medical treatment, emergency hospital treatment or death. Travel insurance must be valid for all Schengen Member States and for the entire duration of applicant’s stay. The minimum insurance coverage of 30,000 € is required;
  • other documents – for the purposes of the visa application procedure, the embassy or consulate general may ask foreign nationals to submit other documents in order to verify the declared purpose of the visit and applicant’s intention to return to his/her home country or the country of his/her residence.

    1. Thank you for your interest to study in Slovakia. Please find the list of Slovak embassies in the link below. If you cannot find your country in that list, then you need to check for Slovak embassy in your neighbor countries. For Example the Slovak embassy in Cairo (Egypt) is also responsible for the citizens of Morocco and Tunisia as well.
