If you are looking for an excellent education in mathematics, the Master of Mathematics program at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics at the Comenius University of Bratislava is an excellent choice. This program is designed to produce experts with specialized skills in mathematics and an additional knowledge of related applied areas.
Overview of the Program
The Master of Mathematics program is a two-year, full-time program taught in English. The program is built on the three key areas of study: mathematical analysis, mathematical structures, and numerical mathematics. Students will gain a good orientation in the key disciplines of modern mathematics, learn how to solve problems using results and techniques in various areas of mathematics and computer science, and develop critical and logical thinking skills. In addition, students will learn to design mathematical models and to apply the theory in other scientific fields, including physics, chemistry, biology, civil engineering, electrical engineering, and economics.
Courses and Study Program
The study program provides students with an overview of the representative cross-section of key disciplines of modern mathematics, and they will get acquainted with the most important abstract and specific mathematical structures and connections between them. Students will learn to solve problems in various mathematical areas using the results of several mathematical disciplines and computer technology. The program also provides the opportunity for students to independently expand and supplement their professional profile by choosing subjects from the offer of other study programs of the faculty.
The program develops three basic topics, according to which the blocks of compulsory elective courses are named: mathematical analysis, mathematical structures, and numerical mathematics. The group of offered elective subjects consists of subjects that complement the subjects of the core of the study program. Students have the opportunity to choose from this offer of elective courses according to their abilities and interests and thus actively participate in specifying their professional profile.
Master’s Thesis
With the diploma thesis, students have to demonstrate the ability to independently acquire theoretical and practical knowledge based on the current state of science and creatively apply, use and develop them. The final thesis will be prepared by the student under the guidance of the thesis supervisor. The supervisor of the final thesis will prepare a written report on the final thesis and propose its evaluation. The final work is assessed by the opponent. The opponent will prepare a written report on the final thesis and propose its evaluation.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Master of Mathematics program typically find job opportunities in academic institutions in basic research, in applied research in academia or industry, in software companies, and in the financial sector. They are qualified to work anywhere where there is a need to create and apply mathematical models, to use them to seek and provide answers to relevant questions arising from applications, to design technological solutions, and to make competent decisions.
Examples of successful final theses of our students include Selfsimilar solutions of nonlinear diffusion equations by Bc. Petra Macková and Weak and strong minimizers of variational integrals by Mgr. Daniel Bednárik.
