Reviewed 29 September 2026. Students sometimes call this “visa renewal,” but a national (type D) visa and temporary residence for the purpose of study are different permissions. The correct procedure depends on the permission you currently hold and your circumstances.
Check your current permission
Check the expiry date and conditions on your visa or residence card. If you hold temporary residence for study and need to continue your studies, ask the competent Slovak Foreign Police department about an application to renew that residence and the current deadline, documents and appointment process. If you hold a national visa, contact the Slovak embassy responsible for your country of citizenship or residence or the competent authority about the correct next step. Do not assume a visa can be extended or that a residence permit must be renewed every academic year.
Documents and timing
The authority may require proof of continuing study, a valid travel document and other evidence under the rules applicable to your case. Document validity, translation or legalization requirements and processing times can change. Start checking the requirements well before your current permission expires; the university can confirm your study status, but only the competent authority can confirm immigration requirements and decide your application.
